“Triumph at Rotary: R K Sabarish Shines in Chess Championship Hosted by Tiruvarur District Chess Academy”

R K Sabarish from Tiruchirappali emerged victorious in the Rotary International 100 Years Celebration Rating tournament, scoring an impressive 6.5/7. He secured a half-point lead over a group of ten players. Organized by the Tiruvarur District Chess Association, the tournament featured a modest entry fee of ₹250, attracting 279 participants from various districts in Tamil Nadu. T Shyam Sundar, the top seed and an International Arbiter, claimed the second runner-up position with a score of 6.5/7. The organizers went the extra mile by providing complimentary lunch for both players and parents. In a bid to support young talents, under-8 and under-10 players received individual prizes. R K Sabarish, seeded third, emerged as the undefeated champion in the Rotary International 100 Years Celebration Rating tournament, which attracted 279 players from various districts across Tamil Nadu. Hailing from Tiruchirappalli, Sabarish scored a remarkable 6.5/7, securing a half-point lead over a group of ten players to claim the championship.

The Prize Distribution function on September 27, 2019, was presided over by Mr. P Ramesh, President of Rotary Club of Mannrgudi Midtown. The event saw Mr. V. Sankar, Secretary of Rotary Club of Mannargudi, extend a warm welcome to the attendees. Mr. M Senthilkumar, Assistant Governor, presented prizes to the winners in the presence of several dignitaries, including Mr. D Jayakumar, Zonal Secretary and coordinator, and Presidents of Rotary Clubs such as Mr. G Karthikeyan, Mr. S Rajmohan, Mr. D Palanivel, and Mr. N Santha Kumar. Also in attendance were the President of Tiruvarur District Chess Association, Mr. P Palaniappan, IA, Chief Arbiter of the event, and various members from Tiruvarur District and Mannargudi Taluk.

The event’s inauguration on District 2981 by Rtn. Major Donar Er N Manimaran, District Governor of RI, featured the ceremonial first move made by Jayadev R Balan and Kamali, SGFI Gold Medallist players from Tiruvarur District. This special occasion was graced by the presence of the President, Secretary, and members of Rotary Club of Mannargudi, Rotary Club of Maddukur, Rotary Club of Mannai Green City, Rotary Club of Adirampattinam, Rotary Club of Mannargudi Mid-Town, Tiruvarur District Chess Association, and Mannargudi Taluk Chess Association.

The tournament showcased not only intense competition but also a sense of community and celebration within the chess fraternity.
